Mapping QTLs for grain dormancy on wheat chromosome 3A and the group 4 chromosomes, and their combined effect OAK
Mori, M.; Uchino, N.; Chono, M.; Chono, K.; Miura, Hideho.
A major QTL for grain dormancy, QPhs.ocs-3A.1, derived from the highly dormant wheat Zenkoujikomugi (Zen), has been identified in a study made under a controlled environment. Further investigations were needed to dissect the precise position and expression of QPhs.ocs-3A.1 under different field conditions because the ability to detect genetic loci for grain dormancy traits is compromised by environmental effects and genotype/environment interactions. Group 4 chromosomes have also been shown to be possible sites of QTLs for grain dormancy. The objectives of this study were (1) to locate additional molecular markers in the QPhs.ocs-3A.1 region, (2) to identify QTLs on the group 4 chromosomes and (3) to elucidate their combined effects. We examined the...

Simultaneous Production of Sphingolipids and Ethanol by Kluyveromyces thermotolerans OAK
Tamura, M; Kimura, K; Yunoki, K; Matsumoto, O; Takakuwa, N; Oda, Yuji; Ohnishi, Masao; 小田, 有二; 大西, 正男.
Kluyveromyces thermotolerans strain NBRC 1674 was selected for the simultaneous production of sphingolipids and ethanol from beet molasses. The strain gradually synthesized ethanol with fermentation periods and attained a level slightly higher than that of the strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae usually used for ethanol production. The sphingolipids accumulated in the cells were composed of almost equal amounts of free ceramides and glucosylceramides. The sphingoid bases and fatty acids of the two sphingolipids differed from each other and changed under aerobic and anaerobic growth conditions. Oxygen limitation may cause accumulation of sphinganine by inhibiting sphingolipid desaturases and enhance its proportion in both the sphingolipids.

Synthesis of tag introducible (3-trifluoromethyl)phenyldiazirine based photoreactive phenylalanine OAK
Hashimoto, Makoto; Hatanaka, Yasumaru; Sadakane, Yutaka; Nabeta, Kensuke.
An efficient synthesis of tag introducible (3-trifluoromethyl)phenyldiazirine based phenylalanine derivatives is described. Alkylation of a chiral glycine equivalent with a spacer containing (3-trifluoromethyl)phenyldiazirinyl bromides enables us to create photoreactive L-phenylalanine derivatives. After introduction of biotin at the spacer, the biotinylated and photoreactive amino acid was applied for L-amino acid oxidase and incorporated into a substrate binding site. These compounds will be powerful tools not only for photoaffinity labeling to elucidate properties of bioactive peptides but also as trifunctional photophors to introduce a ligand skeleton.
